The Sparta
Police Department is an equal opportunity employer that periodically recruits police officer candidates to
sustain an eligibility list or fill vacancies within the Department. Recruitment notices are posted on the
Wisconsin Department of Justice website, WILENET and in the Sparta newspapers. Prospective
candidates are not required to be certifiable through Wisconsin Training and Standards. The Department
will provide the necessary training required for law enforcement certification.
Minimum Standards:
The City
of Sparta Police and Fire Commission (PFC) has established the following minimum standards for police
candidates.
· 18 Years of
Age
· Valid Driver’s
License
· No Felony
Convictions
· United States
Citizen
· Ability to Speak, Read, Comprehend,
and Write Using the English Language
· Physical and Mental Wellbeing to
Perform the Duties of a Law Enforcement Officer
· Possess 60 Fully Accredited College
Level Credits or a 2 Year Associate Degree From a Recognized Adult Education
District
Selection Process:
Prospective Police Officer Candidates who meet the minimum standards will be invited to
participate in the following selection process:
- Written Examination
- Physical Agility
Testing
- Oral
Examination before the Police and Fire Commission (PFC) **
- Police Department Oral Examination(s)
- Extensive Character Investigation
- Psychological Examination
- Physical Examination & Drug Screen
- Two Year Written Contract Pledging Service to the
Community
** Spanish Speaking Bilingual Candidates may be allotted an interview preference by the PFC but
must successfully complete all phases of the selection process.
What to Expect if Hired:
Newly
hired Sparta Police Officers are subjected to a rigorous twelve week Field Training Program that provides
individualized instruction on law enforcement duties and specifics related to the City of Sparta and Monroe
County. Officers will be indoctrinated into police problem solving and receive training on the various weapons
systems maintained by the agency. Advanced training in
interview and interrogations, breath examination, and speed detection devices are just some of the courses
officers typically attend within the first year of employment. After completing the 18 month probationary
period, officers can volunteer to participate in several specialty assignments including the Monroe County
Combined Tactical Unit (CTU), Bicycle Patrol Unit, Evidence Technician, and K9 Handler to name a few.
The men
and women of the Sparta Police Department are highly motivated and devoted to the community. The Department
places an emphasis on career development and balancing individual desires with departmental needs. This allows
officers to obtain a great deal of specialization within their desired field, while meeting the overall goals
and mission of the Department.
